A full-size walk-in anechoic chamber was added to the McIntosh Loudspeaker Division testing facilities in 1980 and the XR16 was the first speaker system to benefit from anechoic testing.
McIntosh continued to earn patents through the 80’s. The MC2500 power amplifier and the XRT20 loudspeaker system, which both earned patents, were released in 1980.
The first McIntosh CD player, the MCD7000 was introduced in 1985. The same year saw McIntosh’s release of the XRT18, which was the first speaker to employ a computer-aided design for a unique network for short columns.
Sadly, Gordon Gow passed away unexpectedly in June, 1989. The company directors arranged a merger with the U.S. subsidiary of Clarion Co. Ltd., of Japan.
